I. Buddha’s Subjection of the Yakkhas

high-definition creative commons photographs from Buddha’s Subjection of the Yakkhas in the Chronicle of the Island together with further information.

The first chapter of the Dīpavaṁsa recounts the Buddha’s initial visit to Sri Lanka. After attaining enlightenment, the Buddha perceived the island as a future stronghold for the Dhamma. To prepare it for human habitation and the eventual arrival of Mahinda, he used his spiritual power to subdue and drive out the indigenous Yakkhas, Bhūtas, and Rakkhasas. This event establishes the island’s sanctity and its destiny as a major Buddhist center.
