48 Hui-hsu, An Enlightened Farewell

high-definition creative commons posters based on Kathryn Ann Tsai’s translation of Pi-chiu-ni chuan entitled, Lives of the Nuns.

Hui-hsü was a Buddhist nun during the Sung dynasty, whose life and spiritual dedication are the focus of the historical account. This biographical material details her early life, including her family origins and her resolution to pursue a religious life by maintaining chastity and ascetic practices from a young age. The narrative highlights her significant relationships, particularly with Prince Yü-chang and his wife, who greatly respected her wisdom, sought her religious guidance, and provided her with resources and a place to reside and teach. The text concludes by noting her eventual return to the Collected Goodness Convent and records the date of her death at the age of sixty-nine.
