05 Ming-kan, Enduring Faith

high-definition creative commons posters based on Kathryn Ann Tsai’s translation of Pi-chiu-ni chuan entitled, Lives of the Nuns.

A biographical account of K’ang Ming-kan, a nun whose secular surname was Chu, detailing her life and spiritual journey within the Buddhist tradition. The narrative outlines her family’s connection to Buddhism and recounts a difficult early experience where she was abducted but vowed not to succumb to her captor, instead becoming a shepherdess while maintaining her faith. Her story continues with her eventually becoming a nun and undertaking stringent religious practices like meditation and chanting, eventually starting the Establishing Blessings Convent. The document concludes by noting the respect and authority she commanded as a spiritual teacher and her eventual death.
