8. The Patient’s ICU Environment

high-definition creative commons photographs from Bhikkhu Sumedha’s Chapter on The Patient’s ICU Environment together with further information.

This chapter uses the simile of sunglasses to explain how patients misperceive the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Patients often see the environment through lenses of misperception, wrong beliefs, and ignorance, leading to anger and misery. By learning to see and remove these mental lenses, a patient can experience the ICU as a neutral, selfless environment. This realization leads to the cessation of unnecessary mental pain and stress.
