This Kalinga War was a pivotal biographical watershed of Aśoka’s life (yr 8). Overcome with remorse, he renounced military conquest and adopted a personal mission as a Teacher of Piety (yr 10). His biography shows him evolving from a conqueror into a propagator of an ethical code, utilizing his administration to spread Dharma. By his own account he spent nearly two decades perfecting this new royal role.
