02 Prince Aśoka the Viceroy
high-definition creative commons photographs about Prince Aśoka the Viceroy together with further information.
Aśoka was appointed viceroy of Ujjain by Biṇḍusāra and married Vedisadevī, daughter of a Vedisa merchant, who bore him Mahinda and Saṅghamittā. He had earlier led a military expedition to pacify Takṣasilā, but was never viceroy there. When Biṇḍusāra fell ill, Aśoka rushed to Pāṭaliputra, eliminated his elder half-brother Sumana (or Susīma), and seized the throne. He was not the designated heir but consolidated power through a four-year struggle.
