Ajahn Santi
Ajahn Santi

These paintings are by Paw Oo and are found in the Santi Dhamma Hall at Wat Olak Madu at Sidam Kiri, in the Padang Serai district of Kedah. The Hall is named after Ajahn Santi, who commissioned the Hall and the paintings in 1993. Ajahn is a very senior Burmese monk who has been a refugee in Malaysia for around 30 years, and Thailand before that.

The paintings are in a modern style and Ajahn tells me that, despite their size and the wealth of detail that are found in them, Paw would sometimes paint two in a day. They cover the stories found in the Burmese edition of the Jātaka Mahānipāta, the birth and quest of the Bodhisatta and the Life of the Buddha and some of his famous disciples.
