The Ubud Palace
The Ubud Palace, Puri Saren Agung, is situated in Campuhan, Ubud, and was the official residence of the Kings of Ubud. It was rebuilt after the 1917 earthquake. Ubud itself was founded by the Indian Rsi Markandya who came to Java and Bali to spread the teachings of Hinduism in the 8th century. Many of the carvings and decorations are by one of Bali’s most revered artists, I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (1862-1978, age 116 years old). There is a documentary about the latter, called Lempad of Bali, which includes material related to his work on Ubud Palace and the Water Palace. The Palace has always been a centre for the arts, and cultural shows and dances still take place in its precincts every week.
The Water Palace, Taman Kemuda Saraswati Temple
The Taman Kemuda Saraswati Temple was founded by Tjokorda Gde Ngoerah (1856-1967, age 111 years old). He was also assisted by one of Bali’s most revered artists, I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (1862-1978, age 116 years old). One of the most striking things about the Palace is its colour design in Purple and White. Note that the Saraswati Temple itself is closed to visitors, and only the Water Palace is accessible.
