Alexander Cunningham came across the site of Jamal Garhi in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 1848, and it was variously excavated over the years since then. The site stands on a hill, around 17 kilometres north of Mardan. The hill is roughly 500ft high, and overlooks the plains and villages below. There is a main stūpa site, a votive stūpa site, plus vihāras and a settlement around the site. The site appears to have been occupied from the 1st-5th CE.
Many artifacts discovered here have been removed, and only the foundations of the buildings in the settlement remain now. Most of the statuary and reliefs recovered at the site were taken to either the Indian Museum, Kolkata, or the British Museum, London. To see 16 examples in the Indian Museum, see my photographs elsewhere on this site: Statues and Reliefs in the Indian Museum, Kolkata (on the page look for Jamal Garhi).
